How to hire
Freelance designer or agency?
When a senior freelance designer is the better call, when an agency earns its overhead — and how to tell which your project needs.
The choice between a freelance designer and an agency is really a choice between senior hands directly on the work and a coordinated team with process on top. I'm Harald Palma, a senior independent UI/UX and product designer in Vienna. For a single product, surface or design system where you want the actual designer doing the actual work, an independent is usually faster, cheaper and closer to the craft. When a project needs full multi-discipline delivery, I bring in my studio, Palma Design — so you get the independent's hands and a team's reach without choosing blindly.
What a freelancer gives you
The senior person, directly. No account layer, no juniors doing the work a portfolio was sold on, faster decisions and a lower cost for the same craft. This is the right fit when the scope is focused and the design itself is the point.
The trade-off is reach: one person can't run five workstreams at once.
What an agency gives you
A team and coordination — useful when a project genuinely spans many disciplines at once (brand, web, product, motion, dev) and someone has to run all of it in parallel. You pay overhead for that coordination; on a focused project it's overhead without a return.
The risk to watch: the senior who pitched isn't always the one who does the work.
The middle path
An independent with a studio behind them gives you both: senior hands on the design, and a team to call in for full build-out. That's how I work — the design is mine, and Palma Design handles delivery when a project needs it.

Should I hire a freelance designer or an agency? +
For a focused scope — one product, surface or design system — a senior freelance designer is usually faster, cheaper and closer to the craft, because you get the actual designer on the actual work. An agency earns its overhead only when a project spans many disciplines at once. Harald Palma works as the senior independent and brings in his studio Palma Design for full delivery.
Is a freelance designer cheaper than an agency? +
Usually, for the same craft — you're not paying for an account layer or a bench of juniors. But cheaper isn't the real reason to choose one: match the structure to the scope. A focused design job wants an independent; a sprawling multi-team programme wants coordination. Harald Palma will say honestly which yours is.
What's the risk with hiring an agency? +
The most common one is that the senior who pitched the work isn't the one who does it — you buy a portfolio and get a junior's execution. With a senior independent, the person you hire is the person doing the work. Harald Palma is the designer on every engagement, with Palma Design brought in only for build-out.
